Real Madrid were reportedly looking at the possibility of bringing back the Portuguese to replace the recently departed Zinedine Zidane.
‘The Telegraph’ revealed a surprising news story in the last few hours with an incredible revelation. They reported that Real Madrid made contact with Jose Mourinho to propose he take Zidane’s former role as manager of the club.
According to the aforementioned source, the contact was made at the weekend, when it had already become known that the Frenchman didn’t want to continue in the Spanish capital. The possibility of Mourinho’s appointment was briefly on the table, before Real Madrid considering the difficulties involved in the Portuguese’s return to the club.
Mourinho committed to Roma a few months ago and it would have been practically impossible for him to leave the Italian side without managing a single game. Stranger things have happened in the world of football, but the manager’s prestige would have gone down the drain if the move had been completed.
For that reason, Real Madrid then looked towards the option of Carlo Ancelotti as the most viable. With the Italian, the process was quickly and ran smoothly until his eventual return to the club, as was confirmed earlier this week.
