Louise Minchin announced she is stepping down from her BBC Breakfast role today, after 20 years of regularly bringing joy to viewers of the daytime programme.
The 52-year-old news presenter, who works alongside Dan Walker three days a week on the iconic BBC Breakfast sofa, shared the emotional news while live-on air.
“Let me take a deep breath, everybody there is something I want to tell you about,” she began.
The beloved journalist was close to tears by the end of her announcement, adding: “I’ve loved being part of it but – there is a but – I’ve decided that is time that I stop setting my alarm for 3.40 – sometimes if I’m

Louise has been an anchor on the show since 2006 – so she will be incredibly missed.
The Mirror takes a look back at Louise’s best moments after spending two decades working at the now Salford-based studio.
Sausage sandwich controversy
In April, Louise divided fans of the breakfast show with her choice of sausage sandwich condiment.
It’s possibly one of the most memorable moments the news presenter has had on the TV, as she shocked her co-stars with her strange habit.
During a segment she presented with Dan, Louise said that instead of the traditional red or brown sauce on her sausage butty, she adds marmalade.

The light-hearted confession came as Louise and Dan discussed a shortage of tomato ketchup sachets in the US at the time.
Kicking off the debate, Dan asked Louise: “The important question to ask you this morning is: Sausage Sandwich, red sauce or brown sauce?”
But Louise replied: “Neither – marmalade. That’s really messed with your head hasn’t it?”
A clearly shocked Dan said: “What? You’re a maverick.

“My grandad used to have marmalade with bacon but what just normal marmalade or like an onion…?”
Shaking her head defiantly, Louise confirmed: “No just normal marmalade.”
Viewers of the show were left less than impressed, with many taking to Twitter to criticise her choice of sauce for her sausage butty – but Louise just shrugged it off.
Touching hearts of the nation
Bubbly presenter Louise has also touched the hearts of the nation in other ways.
Back in December 2020, she was reduced to tears after a touching segment about a care home.
The show was forced to go on a break after Louise started crying.
She was overcome with emotion after seeing how staff at Court House in Somerset spent 84 days apart from their families to keep residents safe during the pandemic.
A clip showed the families of residents singing a rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas as a show of thanks.
“Do you know what? It’s been a year, hasn’t it?” she said, as Jon handed her a box of tissues.
It’s no surprise that Louise shares an incredibly close relationship with her co-stars – Dan Walker, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.
Previously speaking to The Mirror about them, she said: “I’d say we’re a tight team, and also, more importantly, we’ve got each other’s back. We’d back each other up. We really would. We work as a unit. I’m envious of Naga’s shoes.”
Her colleague Dan added: “It’s a great gig, and I love it. And from day one Louise made the job really easy.
“I wouldn’t have done it for as long and enjoyed it for this long without being able to sit next to somebody like her. I’ve learned an awful lot from her.”
‘Embarrassing’ podcast blunder
Another funny moment Louise had while on-screen saw her walk off set after suffering an ’embarrassing’ blunder.
She suffered an awkward mobile phone gaffe live on air – and the programme was interrupted when Louise accidentally started playing her new podcast out loud after sitting on her phone.
As the panicking presenter tried to turn it off, she said: “Sorry, god that’s so embarrassing.”
Louise stood up to walk off camera as she fumbled around with her phone, leaving giggling co-host Dan Walker alone on the big red sofa.
Louise could be heard saying: “How have I done that? I’m literally going to have to walk off set.”
Trying not to laugh too much, Dan said: “She’s walking off. She’s embarrassed. That’s Louise’s new podcast called ‘The Tripod’.
Viewers then saw a photo of Glasgow as Louise regained her composure and returned to the sofa.
She confessed: “I’m really properly embarrassed. How have I done that?”
Revealing it was still playing, Dan said: “It’s still going. Have we managed to turn it off?”
Red-faced Louise admitted: “I genuinely don’t know what I did. I apologise profusely.”
Dan added: “Gosh, you really are embarrassed aren’t you.”
Stunned viewers took to Twitter this morning to respond to the shock news of her resignation from the show, with many agreeing that the red sofa ‘would not be the same’ without Louise.
“Blimey that knocked me for six this morning. We love Louise Minchin and will miss her, she will be a tough act to follow,” said one.
“Oh no Louise, you will be missed. You are the rock of Breakfast after Bill Turnbull. What ever you do best of luck,” said another.
“All the best Louise you deserve to switch that alarm off. You and Dan have made mornings all that more bearable with your sunny dispositions. You will be sorely missed,’ added a third.
